11-year-old Rory’s full of make-believe voices. Her only parent, Balfus – a performer in a circus-like troupe – disappears on a misguided treasure-hunting quest to steal gold from a dragon. Rory sets out on a mission to rescue him. She enlists two other performers from her father’s troupe to help her journey: Penelope, who has a debt to repay to free her family from an unjust curse, and Kite, a zealous boy who idolizes Balfus. They reach the mountain and face off against the dragon, but Penelope is thwarted, and Kite, the young boy, is eaten! Desperate to figure out a way to save her father and Kite, Rory befriends a creepy talking weasel, who tells her that they are alive and trapped in the hollow belly of the dragon. Rory agrees to a plan hatched by the weasel. Using a magical dirt, The Pink Soil, Rory will shape-shift into a dragon herself, tricking her into freeing her nearly-consumed prisoners. To pull this off, Rory has to harness the “voices” from her make-believe.
