Nico,15,is sailing his family’s boat towards the Canary Islands. Assif,a 12-year-old from Guinea, boards a migrant canoe in southern Morocco, fleeing hunger and hardship. A storm causes both vessels to sink and find themselves on a remote Moroccan beach. Together, they must rely on their strength, ingenuity, and wisdom to cross Morocco towards the European border. They face kidnappers who plan to sell them to the mafia controlling the gold and coltan mines in central Africa and unexpected dangers. But they also encounter noble souls, as an eccentric French aviator who rescues them and flies them to Tangier in his exotic plane. The two youngsters become siblings “by choice”. They are only 2 children alone on the border between Africa and Europe. Castaways is an adventure film with a social focus on the realities faced by those who attempt to migrate from Africa to Europe, but told with moments of absurdity, comedy, and offbeat situations.
